Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento? There is no single best e-commerce platform, only the best fit for your products, team and plans. Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento (Adobe Commerce) power a huge share of online stores, and each one is excellent in the right situation. Here is how they compare on the things that matter day to day.
Shopify: fastest to launch, least to maintain
Shopify is a hosted platform, so hosting, security and updates are handled for you. You pay a monthly plan plus transaction or app fees.
- Best for: brands that want to sell quickly and keep technical work to a minimum
- Watch out for: app costs adding up, and less control over checkout on lower plans
- AI: built-in tools for product descriptions and a growing range of AI search and personalisation apps
WooCommerce: full ownership and flexibility
WooCommerce turns a WordPress site into a store. The software is free; you pay for hosting, premium extensions and maintenance.
- Best for: content-led brands, custom requirements and businesses that want to own every part of their site
- Watch out for: you are responsible for hosting, updates and security, so plan for ongoing care
- AI: works with almost any AI tool through plugins and APIs, with complete freedom in how it is set up
Magento: built for complex catalogues
Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce handle large catalogues, multiple stores, B2B pricing and complex rules out of the box.
- Best for: larger retailers and B2B sellers with complex catalogues, many store views or heavy integrations
- Watch out for: higher development and hosting costs, and the need for experienced developers
- AI: Adobe Commerce includes AI-driven recommendations and search; Open Source relies on extensions
Five questions to decide
- How many products and variants do you have, and how complex are your pricing rules?
- Who will maintain the store, and how much technical work can they take on?
- Do you need B2B features such as company accounts, quotes and custom price lists?
- Which systems must connect to the store, such as ERP, CRM or warehouse software?
- What will the platform cost over three years, including apps, hosting and development?
Question five is the one people skip. A cheaper monthly plan can end up costing more once you add the apps and workarounds you need.
Our honest take
For most small and mid-sized brands, Shopify or WooCommerce is the right answer, and the choice comes down to whether you value convenience or control. Magento makes sense when complexity is the main problem you are trying to solve.
