Writing product descriptions that rank and sell

How to answer buyer questions while helping search engines understand your products.

Writing product descriptions that rank and sell

A good product description does two jobs at once. It convinces a person to buy, and it helps search engines and AI assistants understand exactly what you are selling. In good product descriptions, the two goals are not in conflict. Write for the shopper first, then make sure the important details are easy for machines to find.

Start with the questions buyers ask

Before you write, list the questions a shopper has about this product. Look at your support emails, reviews and the “People also ask” box in search results. Typical questions include:

  • What is it made of, and how big is it?
  • Will it work with what I already have?
  • How do I care for it, and how long will it last?
  • Who is it for, and who is it not for?

Answer each one clearly in the description.

Lead with the benefit, follow with the facts

Open with one or two sentences on what the product does for the buyer, then give the specifics. “Keeps coffee hot for 12 hours on a cold commute” is more persuasive than “Double-walled stainless steel”, but you need both.

Make it easy to scan

Most shoppers skim. Use short paragraphs, a bulleted list of key features and a clear specifications section. Put the details that most often decide a purchase, such as size, fit and compatibility, near the top.

Use natural keywords, once

Include the words people actually search for, such as the product type, key material and main use, in the title, the first sentence and a heading. Then stop. Repeating the same phrase does not help and makes the text harder to read.

Avoid duplicate content

Copying the manufacturer’s description means your page looks identical to hundreds of others. Even a short, original paragraph about how the product is used makes a difference. For variants such as colours and sizes, keep one main description rather than near-copies.

Do not forget the extras

  • Descriptive image alt text, which helps accessibility and image search
  • Product schema markup with price, availability and reviews (Google’s merchant listing guide lists the fields)
  • A short FAQ for products that generate repeat questions

Scaling it up with AI

If you have hundreds of products, AI can draft descriptions from your product data and a brand voice guide, so your team only has to review and refine them. Our content writing and SEO services can help you set up a workflow that keeps quality high.
